Oracle EBS R12 Migration

Hello Readers,

Hope all of you had a great weekend, as we are nearing the end of the first month in the year 2012 just wanted to give out a short description about our EBS R12 Migration solution. If you have any questions or comments after reading the following please do not hesitate to write back.

Chain-Sys is a highly successful products and services company in Oracle E-Business Suite space. It leverages its appLOAD™ suite of EBS productivity tools to accelerate data conversions in its Oracle EBS implementations and it is a clear differentiator. Chain-Sys tools and services are well geared to help EBS Customers do a technical upgrade to or re-implement Oracle E-Business Suite R12.

appLOAD™ mass data loading product, has been widely accepted in the EBS marketplace. It easily wins over competitive products in terms of the number of templates (adapters) for EBS, speed and throughput of loading. Designed from scratch as robust Enterprise Data Loading solution and as a server based solution, as against Excel or front-end based solutions, the throughput and speed can be controlled by parallel processing of the load jobs. Cutover times have been shrunk hundred fold or more by using appLOAD™.

appINTERFACE™ is a clear cost effective choice of discerning customers when it comes to data integration between Oracle EBS and other systems such as Siebel, Oracle Retail, Salesforce, Agile, Icon, Steelwedge, Ariba, Demantra, Optivision etc. The data marshaling would be real-time or batch based on the business need. This product has been tested and certified by Oracle Corporation as Oracle Validated Integration.

Chain-Sys customer Patel Logistics presented on “Oracle Business Accelerators implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite” at the OpenWorld 2011. It was a record 45 day implementation. Our customer BILT presented “Complex Oracle Process Manufacturing Release 11.5.7 Reimplementation on Release 12.1.3″ again in the same OpenWorld Conference.

Chain-Sys Celebrates Pongal

PONGAL: A HARVEST FESTIVAL

Last week Chain-Sys celebrated “Pongal” a festival in South India in a big way within our new office building. It was a joyous occasion that had entailed food and drinks for our employees in our brand new cafeteria. We also had many team building exercises with various team competing.  The festival officially opened the new office building complex to the general public.

For those of who, who don’t know what “Pongal” is here is a little paragraph about it. This festival is a celebration of harvest all over India under different names.  In South India it’s called Pongal and is celebrated by Tamilians in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Union Territory of Pondicherry and Srilanka. This festival is timed by an astronomical event which is the winter solstice. Pongal is traditionally dedicated to the Sun God Surya and marks the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun from its southernmost limit, a movement traditionally referred to as uttarayana (as called in North India). It coincides with the festival Makara Sankranthi  (famously known as Kite Flying Day) celebrated throughout India as the winter harvest, it is usually held from January 13-15 in the Gregorian Calender i.e. from the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi. This also represents the Indic solstice when the sun purportedly enters the 10th house of the Indian Zodiac i.e. Makaram or Capricorn.

R12 – Technical Upgrade or Re-implementation? (Part 2)

When Customizations are core to the business and cannot be given up, which is invariably the case with the bigger companies, the choice would be difficult. A Tech Upgrade doesn’t alleviate the need to test every custom object in the new environment and make necessary corrections and adaptations. Re-Implementation also needs the evaluation of the current custom objects and analyzing if they are needed in R12 and if so with what changes.

Each of the older instances is bound to have their own unique setups. (Shhh… Nobody likes to live with setups done by people other than themselves). It is better to bring all the parties to the Conference room and decide on common ways of doing business or in other words re-implement. If no consolidation is contemplated and instances would be individually moved to R12, tech upgrade looks cool.

We discussed about historical data in the previous paragraph. In continuation if you are anyway deciding to go the archiving route, Tech Upgrade is it. But in all above decisions, there can be factors unique to your organization that can sway your decision to the other way.

Here is a fun calculator to play with

R12 – Technical Upgrade or Re-implementation? (Part 1)

The Oracle E-Business Suite user community knows very well that they have to move to release R12, unless they want to pay for Premium Support to Oracle Corporation or go into unsupported mode. So 2012 is the year of moving to R12. If I had my way, I’d call 2012 the year of R12 the Chinese way. If anyone asks what animal is the R12, you can safely answer that it is a dog like robot. There are two ways to R12. One is Technical upgrade and the other is Re-Implementation. Here I need to mention the famous monologue delivery in the blockbuster movie Dr. Zhivago (1965), by Rod Steiger directed towards Julie Christie,

“Komarovski: There are two kinds of men and only two. And that young man is one kind. He is high-minded. He is pure. He’s the kind of man the world pretends to look up to, and in fact despises. He is the kind of man who breeds unhappiness, particularly in women. Do you understand?

Komarovski: I think you do. There’s another kind. Not high-minded, not pure, but alive. Now, that your tastes at this time should incline towards the juvenile is understandable; but for you to marry that boy would be a disaster. Because there’s two kinds of women. There are two kinds of women and you, as we well know, are not the first kind.”

Life is full of two things. You have to choose one each time.

Compelling reasons for the users to consider moving to R12:

  • Take advantage of the new features in R12, especially in the Financial module
  • Avoid Premium and Extended Support fees to Oracle
  • Do away with any 11i customizations, if they are available as standard features in R12
  • Use it as an opportunity to improve your processes and clean up the data.
Hop, Skip and Jump

What release you are in? 11.5.9 and above : You can follow straight technical upgrade. Else: You can Re-implement or do 2 technical upgrades (a hop, skip and jump approach !).

Decision Time

Here is more food for your thought. (As if thinking needs food). Decisions, decisions and decisions.

The above decision is a no brainer. When you have major business process changes, now is the time to re think and get the processes clean and streamlined. By the way you have an option to clean up the master data and decide on selective movement of transactions to the new R12.

Acquisitions, mergers, divestitures, all throw up unique requirements and challenges. They are preferably handled by a clean reimplementation. Of course you’d need to do some closer analysis as to whether tech upgrade or re-implementation is the option. The cost of re-implementation has been weighing heavy on the decision makers. The good news is with the appMIGRATE tool, the data is handled, cleaned and migrated without huge programming efforts. Using an available tool is always better than home grown programs.

When most of your Customizations are available as standard features in the new R12, it would be advantageous to jettison your customizations  and make use of the new standard features that have come up in the R12. It is like travel, less luggage, pleasanter is the travel.

To be Continued in Part 2.
